Jazz has always been a flexible style, open to creative interpretation and experimentation from different artists. There’s a difference between temporary flirtation with new ideas and long term musical directions that alter the course of jazz moving into the future. True change in jazz has always been the result of strong musical voices with clear artistic visions. These are musicians completely dedicated to their approach, who passionately advocate for their ideas, refine their musical vision with every performance, and steadfastly continue their artistic pursuits until the world listens. These are the musicians that we need to move jazz into the future; these are the musicians that show us possibilities that soon become reality.

In a broad world of twenty-first century possibilities, Afro-Peruvian Jazz has become an important piece of the future; we’ve been led into this bold new future by Gabriel Alegría And His Afro-Peruvian Jazz Sextet. For over ten years, Alegría and his group has boldly combined Afro-Peruvian rhythms with jazz harmonies, innovative compositions, and rich improvisation. They’ve set a standard for the music that is full of musical integrity, brimming with enthusiastic devotion, and consistently exciting. With Alegría on trumpet, Laura Andrea Leguía on saxophones, Freddy Lobatón on percussion, Yuri Juarez on guitar, John Benitez on bass, and Shirazette Tinnin on drums, the Afro-Peruvian Sextet is a powerful lineup. Thanks to this group of musicians, Afro-Peruvian Jazz has become a permanent part of the Latin Jazz landscape, that will continue long into the future.
