Welcome to Episode #5 of the Latin Jazz Corner Podcast! I’m doing something a little different this time around, breaking our usual format. Since we are approaching the end of the year, I’m going to take the opportunity this time around to reflect upon Latin Jazz in 2016. This time around, we won’t have an interview, featured music, or album reviews; it’s simply going to be me talking about the year. I hope that you’ll stick around to hear me reflect upon Latin Jazz in 2016.

I was inspired to take a different approach and dig into this topic by a few things that I saw online – here’s a few links that I mention:
The NPR Music Jazz Critics Poll
JazzWeek | Year End: 2016 Jazz Chart

We lost some great musicians during 2016, and I spend some time talking about Alfredo “Chocolate” Armenteros, Naná Vasconcelos, Gato Barbieri, and Carlos Averhoff. If you’ve had experiences with any of these musicians that you’d like to share, or maybe you want to point out someone that I’ve missed, send me an e-mail so that I can discuss it on the show.

From there, I talk through my Top 10 Latin Jazz releases of 2016. This was a pretty hard list to put together – there was a wealth of outstanding music released during the year. I think that you’ll like my list though – there’s some albums that you might expect and others that might be surprises. This is definitely a collection of outstanding music though, so check out these ten albums!

Do you disagree with my choices? Are there albums that you think should be on the list? Do you have some thoughts on the albums that I picked? Send me an e-mail and let’s continue the discussion about great 2016 Latin Jazz releases on the show!

We end things off with a look at upcoming thoughts about 2017, albums to be released and plans for LJC. If you’ve got news about 2017 that you’d like to share, let me know!

I hope that you enjoyed the fifth episode of the podcast – thanks for trying something a little different with me! We’ll be back to our regular format in episode #6, featuring an interview with Brent Fisher, who leads The Clare Fisher Latin Jazz Big Band.

If your have a minute, it would be great if you could write a review of the podcast on iTunes. It makes a big difference in the visibility of the show, and ultimately, how much I can support Latin Jazz! You can write a review HERE.

As always, the most important thing to me is to create a resource that will support the musicians and fans around the world that keep Latin Jazz alive – if you’ve ideas, suggestions, or even compliments, send them my way!

Thanks so much for listening! Keep it in clave – see you in episode #6!
