If there’s one name that has a universal connection with Brazilian music and jazz, it’s certainly the iconic composer and performer Antonio Carlos Jobim. His songs are beloved by people around the world, attaining status as standards in both the jazz and Brazilian music realms – a dual feat not accomplished by many musicians. He’s won an Album Of the Year Grammy Award, he’s been recognized by the Brazilian government, and he’s been admitted into the Latin Songwriters Hall Of Fame. His classic song “The Girl From Ipanema” is one of the most recorded songs in history. To say that Jobim is one of the most important composers in Latin Jazz would be an understatement – he’s one of the most important figures in the music. Jobim would have celebrated his 90th birthday yesterday, a momentous occasion that was celebrated with a number of tributes from musicians around the world.

Mari Rosa is a singer and songwriter from New York who has been highly influenced by Jobim and integrated that influence into a songwriting style that includes pieces of jazz, pop, and bossa nova. Her first album Honeyspot captured that wide range influences nicely, and the heavy dose of bossa nova helped the album capture the first LJC Next Generation Album Of The Year. Since then, Mari Rosa has explored a number of musical avenues, performing with a wide array of people, including Latin Jazz musicians Cachao and Fernando Otero. It’s been inspiring to see Mari Rosa’s growth over the years and to also see that her love for Jobim has stayed a consistent influence upon her musical output. So it’s no surprise that Mari Rosa would remember Jobim on his 90th birthday with a musical tribute that recognizes the beauty of his music through Mari Rosa’s unique vocal spin. Check out her version of Aguas De Marco, which takes on a new life as a piece of acapella music, something that Jobim himself would have loved.
