In every way, Volcán is a Latin Jazz super group, overflowing with musicality, technique, and knowledge. Sitting at the core of this group is Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, who has long been an innovative and explosive voice in Latin Jazz. Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez sits behind the drum kit, bringing decades of experience playing alongside musicians like Paquito D’Rivera, Michel Camilo, and Roy Hargrove. Volcán presents a bit of a reunion for Rubalcaba and Hernandez, who worked together in the pianist’s band Proyecto while they both lived in Cuba. Providing another layer of rhythmic intensity, Giovanni Hidalgo brings his legendary conga abilities to the group. Able to hold a groove, interact on the spur of the moment, or solo with a mind boggling technical ability, Hidalgo interjects an inspired presence into tho mix. The youngest musician within the band, Jose Armando Gola lays down a ferocious foundation on bass, holding his own alongside three legends. There’s an unbelievable amount of musical superpowers in Volcán and they’re all on display in this tour de force rendition of Cuban classic, “El Manisero.”
