Brazilian pianist Jovino Santos Neto is a prolific composer and performer that has taken his music around the world. While still a young pianist in Brazil, Jovino became a member of legendary composer Hermeto Pascoal’s band in 1977. As he spent the next fifteen years working alongside Pascoal, he developed an artistic vision as a pianist, composer, and arranger. He also became one of the world’s foremost specialists on Pascoal’s music, as well as a strong advocate of his mentor. After leaving Brazil for the States, Jovino spent time on the road with percussionist Airto Moreira and vocalist Flora Purim, playing Brazilian Jazz in a high profile gig. He later landed in Seattle, Washington, composing, performing, and teaching music at The Cornish College Of The Arts. His Quinteto has become a staple around town, but that’s just the beginning of Jovino’s work. Back and forth between Brazil, he has released a number of well received albums, earning three Grammy nominations. Jovino works as featured soloist with orchestras, big bands, small ensembles, in duet, and more. Jovino is a constant stream of musical energy, as you can see in today’s video feature, which has Jovino performing with his Quinteto playing an uptempo samba entitled “Vai e Vem (Coming & Going)”.
