While there have been many Latin Jazz artists that inspired me throughout my connection to the music, one of the key groups that sealed my love for Latin Jazz was Jerry Gonzalez And The Fort Apache Band. The first album that I heard from the band was Moliendo Café and it struck me in so many different ways. The knowledge of the band members seemed to be rooted authentically in both Afro-Cuban music and jazz – there was no doubt that these musicians had played and studied both styles deeply. The amount of freedom in the band left an impression on me as well; one moment the group was charging through a fierce rumba and then on they would immediately shift gears and be swinging hard. The overall spontaneity of the group just blew my mind – they were consistently listening to each other and adjusting their approach on the fly. It was all such an incredible blend that completely altered my perception of Latin Jazz. I dived back into other Fort Apache recordings like Rumba Para Monk, Earthdance, and Obatalá, as well as projects involving the Gonzalez brothers like Grupo Folklorico y Experimental and Conjunto Libre. Fort Apache Band was a real launching point for me – without this group we probably wouldn’t have Latin Jazz Corner or any of the other energy that I’ve invested into Latin Jazz. I know that I’m not the only one that feels like this, so in dedication to the tremendous influence of Jerry Gonzalez And The Fort Apache Band, today’s video is a live performance of the group playing Ron Carter’s “81.”
