There was a time when big bands served as the training grounds for young musicians who wanted to live their lives through jazz. When big bands toured the country on a regular basis, they allowed musicians to make a regular income, solidifying their future as a professional. At the same time, young musicians regularly sat next to more experienced musicians in a big band; this relationship translated into mentors teaching a musical language to the younger generation. As the financial realities of a changing world pushed jazz musicians towards smaller groups, big bands slowly disappeared, as did these same opportunities for young musicians. The training of young people moved to a more academic setting, but the lack of big bands has forever changed the way that the tradition survives.

Fortunately, musicians like Arturo Sandoval realize the importance of the big band in jazz and have worked hard to keep the instrumentation alive. Sandoval has released several albums using the big band format, using his star power to get this type of ensemble heard. In the studio, Sandoval often overdubs all the brass parts and uses limited musicians following a similar process. When he hits the road though, that’s when he brings together a large group of musicians onto one stage. He often travels with a small group of regular musicians, complementing his core ensemble with a wealth of local musicians. It’s not exactly the same as twenty musicians traveling across the country together, but it does create similar opportunities for artistic exchange. In the case of today’s video, Sandoval is playing mentor on one of his popular songs, “Funky Cha Cha” sharing the stage with the North Texas One O’Clock Lab Band directed by Jay Saunders.
