John Benitez has been a first call bassist in the Latin Jazz world for many years, bringing his high level of musicianship into every situation. A deep musician on both acoustic and electric bass, Benitez has the ability to deliver a heavy groove across a wide array of Latin styles as well as a steady stream of unforgettable solos. As a sideman, Benitez has played alongside Eddie Palmieri, David Sánchez, Conrad Herwig, Roy Hargrove, Hilton Ruiz, and many more. As a leader, Benitez has given us two albums – Descarga In New York and Purpose, both unique and distinctly different albums. In the past year, Benitez published a bass method entitled Freedom In Clave: A Rhythmic Approach To The Bass which is a thorough and challenging study of the clave that will push any musician into a more intimate knowledge of the rhythm. He’s a complete musician that has upped the level of musicianship in Latin Jazz for many years.

As a bassist, it’s always a treat to hear Benitez play and this video has him laying down a heavy groove on electric bass. This video features his group playing “Bomba Lirica,” a track from his album Purpose and providing a solid lesson on modern Latin Jazz.
