Pianist Eddie Palmieri celebrated his 80th birthday at the end of 2016, and we’re still celebrating to this very day. There’s a lot to applaud when we’re talking about Palmieri – from his percussive, jaw dropping approach to the piano to his smart and experimental songwriting and his experience as a band leader. He’s always been a musician that has drawn upon the best of salsa and Latin Jazz, giving us something that overflows with vivid musicality. There are very few people that have influenced and inspired the Latin Jazz world than Palmieri – we should be celebrating his work on a daily basis.

In honor of Palmieri’s legacy and the occasion of his eightieth year, we’re going to feature a classic performance from an interesting time in el maestro’s career. Palmieri had moved past La Perfecta at this point, and was fronting a salsa band which featured both Ismael Quintana and Chex Feliciano. He won two Grammy Awards during this time, bringing him acclaim and opportunity. In this video, he’s got a pretty heavy band, including Charlie Sepulveda and Juancito Torres on trumpet, as well as Giovanni Hidalgo and Anthony Carrillo on percussion, among others. The song being performed, “Chocolate Ice Cream,” comes from a 1970 Palmieri release, Superimposition, which featured a combination of Cuban standards and descargas. This era – squeezed between La Perfecta & his Afro-Caribbean Jazz Sextet, sometimes gets overlooked; as we can see from this video, that’s unfortunate – there was amazing music.

Thanks for 80 years Eddie, looking forward to enjoying many more!
