The Latin Jazz suffered a major loss this past Wednesday March 8, 2017, as flautist Dave Valentin passed away. Valentin had suffered several strokes over the last five years and had begun to experience the effects of Parkinson’s Disease. It was especially tragic to see the influential flautist die at the young age of 64.

Despite his young age at the time of his death, Valentin’s career was filled with bright moments that made an impact upon modern Latin Jazz. We’re going to dedicate this week’s video features to Dave Valentin’s career, checking out live performances from different pieces of his career.

Dave Valentin was one of the superstars of the GRP label in the eighties, a fact that led to many opportunities for him. There were certainly performance and financial gains to be had from his association with GRP – it was one of the most profitable and popular jazz labels of the era. At the same time, the musical opportunities were golden; the GRP label housed a number of top notch musicians. At one point, the label gathered all of their superstars into one place and formed the GRP All-Star Big Band. This jaw dropping group delivered two amazing albums and some equally astounding live performances. Of course, Valentin was front and center in the big band, especially when they played a Latin Jazz classic like “Manteca.”
