There’s nothing like a collection of masters getting together to jam on a well worn standard. It’s always exciting to hear new works, but they always emerge with an aire of practiced refinement. That makes sense – the musicians haven’t played that song for an extended amount of time, so they add extra care to their performance. This can lead to great music, but it often lacks the spontaneity of a jam session. When a musician has played a song thousands of times, they’re ready to try something new with it. At that point, anything – and everything – can happen.

Today’s video features several master musicians playing one of those well known Latin Jazz standards – and exploding into a breath taking descarga. In this case, flautist Dave Valentin and trumpet player Chocolate Arementeros are already on stage with a top notch band when they are joined by timbalero Tito Puente. The group decides for have some fun with the Pedro Flores tune “Obsesion,” a tune was part of Valentin’s regular repertoire and a favorite among musicians. All three musicians – as well as members of the band – stretch out through jaw dropping solos into a fiery, must-hear rendition of this tune.
