As a teacher, the summer presents a good deal of free time for me, and I tend to fill it with a long list of goals. Of course, I value the extra time with my family, and I take some time to simply relax. If I didn’t do that, I’d return to the classroom exhausted. Still, I enjoy pushing myself as a player, an advocate, and a general musician, so I fill my time with activities based around a set of goals. This summer, a major goal for myself is to deepen my understanding of Brazilian music. I think that I have some knowledge about the music from a variety of perspectives, but I feel like this is an area where I could forge a deeper connection with the music.

Part of the inspiration behind my desire to connect with Brazilian music is the beauty of choro, which I’ve been hearing a lot lately from clarinetist Anat Cohen. Her embrace of Brazilian music is unparalleled among Stateside jazz musicians, and the respect that she shows for the genre really captivates me. She regularly connects with some of the country’s foremost players, exposing me to a number of truly outstanding musicians. Her recent releases, Outra Coisa, and Rosa Dos Ventos are regular listens for me, and I feel like I’m learning something everytime that I hear them. So I was thrilled to find these three vides of Cohen performing live in KNKX Studios with Trio Brasileiro – it’s a great example of her love of the music and resultant expertise. There’s some serious inspiration here – enjoy!
