Today’s video feature brings a Latin Jazz artist that has worked hard to produce outstanding music for a long time and certainly falls under the category or artist deserving more attention – pianist Roger Davidson. With formal training in classical piano, composition, and choral conducting, Davidson has a strong foundation that has led to a diverse career. As a recording artist, Davidson has produced albums of original classical music, straight ahead jazz, klezmer music, tango, Brazilian Jazz, solo piano, and more. He founded SoundBrush Records, a company dedicated to promoting the bast collection of music that Davidson produces, as both recorded audio and sheet music. His compositions are inventive, insightful, and stemming directly from their original traditions, while his piano playing is precise, expressive, and engaging. Davidson has recently released a new album, Oração Para Amanha (Prayer For Tomorrow), which is a fantastic example of all the wonderful qualities that he brings to Brazilian Jazz. It’s a live recording with his Brazilian trio augmented by harmonica player and vibraphonist Hendrik Muerkens, capturing a lively exchange between the group on Davidson’s original music. Today’s video comes from the concert that produced those recordings, with the group playing the Davidson tune “Rio de Janeiro” – enjoy!
