Today’s LJC Video Feature shines the spotlight upon the most influential conguero in recent history; someone that showed us a whole new potential on the instrument – Giovanni Hidalgo. He has performed with every major name in Latin Jazz, ranging from Eddie Palmieri to Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Dave Valentin, Hilton Ruiz, Paquito D’Rivera, and so many more. Hidalgo has produced a number of top-notch Latin Jazz albums as a leader, delivering some must-hear albums like Villa Hidalgo, Worldwide, Time Shifter, and more. He has worked as an educator, serving as a faculty member at The Berklee College Of Music and creating a masterful instructional video in collaboration with Changuito. Hidalgo has given so much to our music; his contribution is undeniably an incredible influence upon modern Latin music.

For the past few years, Hidalgo has been battling diabetes, leaving him unable to perform on a regular basis; in his time of need, it’s time for us to pay him back for all he’s given Latin music. This Sunday, July 2nd, there will be a benefit concert for Hidalgo in the San Francisco Bay Area; it’s our Live Latin Jazz Pick Of The Week, you can get all the details HERE. If you can’t make the benefit concert, you can still show your support through Hidalgo’s Go Fund Me campaign; please consider making a donation, you can do that HERE. In the meantime, get some inspiration from Hidalgo with this classic performance as the legendary conguero plays Raíces Latinas alongside an all-star band, including tresero Nelson Gonzalez, bongocero Johnny “Dandy” Rodriguez, and more!
